Recent news says there will be a merger of French and American corporations Alcatel and Lucent. Lucent Technologies is the company home of Bell Labs, the inventor of the transistor. In its previous incarnation as Western Electric, Lucent was the first company to develop a Japanese-American joint venture which created the company known today as NEC.

I'm not going to pretend I can tell you the exact calendar day, because I try each year to let it recede into the dim mists of yesterdays.

Five years ago I began a violent regime of radiation treatments. Shortly after finishing radiation I began "aggressive" intravenous chemotherapy. In 'cancer survivors' lore five years is a significant milestone.

For me the process marked the dawn of a severe hearing loss and other permanent sensory deficits.
I think with very little chemical alteration one could conjure up a convincing gothic horror story from the experience of having your head bolted to a table each day with a comfortable, custom-fitted facial apparatus as a gigantic, computerized, space-age device homes in on your "treatment zone", while the technicians retreat for what seems like an hour to another room, behind a Chernobyl-worthy barrier wall.

But–salut.

Like the cold war–it's done with. I'm glad.
